Interview: VÉRITÉ

verite picSynthPop Rocks was swept of their feet when New York City pop songstress, VÉRITÉ, released the stunning debut EP three months ago. Last night, VÉRITÉ performed a breathtaking rooftop concert at the renowned W Hotel in Washington, D.C. Afterwards, we sat down with VÉRITÉ, to talk about her rising popularity, upcoming tour, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

SynthPop Rocks Interview with VÉRITÉ’

Conducted by: Brendan Oster

Me: First off, the concert was amazing. When you see the performance live, you really understand and see the heart and soul of VÉRITÉ.

VÉRITÉ: Thank you, that means a lot. That’s definitely the goal. We have all the recorded music and that’s awesome, but to bring a much more rocking element and energy to the show.

Me: The song, Weekend, has 1.8 million plays on Spotify and Echo has 1.7 million. How are you feeling about that?

VÉRITÉ: It feels phenomenal. I am a huge Spotify advocate and for me, it’s still a shock.

Me: Any moment, event, or inspiration that wanted you to be a singer and the artist VÉRITÉ?

VÉRITÉ: There are a few. I have been singing since I was 8 or 9. I played shows with my dad in my hometown. When I was 13, I started an all girls punk cover band. It was bad, but it was good. We covered everything, Green Day, Cranberries, distorted rocking versions of Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull. We were horrible though. I think I just lose myself into writing and it’s taken a really long time to figure out who I am as a writer. I think VÉRITÉ and this project came out of this body of writing that I am doing and for once, it felt right. It felt like an accurate representation of myself.

Me: If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life, what are you having? Most important question.

VÉRITÉ: Can I do a meal and a dessert?

Me: Absolutely.

VÉRITÉ: Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Dumplings. I eat a lot of Dumplings.

Me: So this is your first headline tour. What cities are you most excited to play and explore?

VÉRITÉ: South By (SXSW), I never been to Texas and I never played and been to SXSW. It will be crazy and insane but I am definitely excited to part of it. I am going to Canada for the 1st time and excited to see Montreal. So I get to say I have been to Canada.

Me: The song, Strange Enough, is very poetic and soulful.

VÉRITÉ: Did you cry?

Me: I want to. Can you explain the meaning behind it?

VÉRITÉ: I tend write in stream-of-consciousness. For me, it has a definite layered meaning. But it can be universal for everyone. I think it’s a question of whether or not we are actually capable of loving…if we really want to get f*cking depressing and want to jump out the window, no, I’m joking.

Me: I understand you still wait tables.

VÉRITÉ: I have been waiting tables for 10 years. I am a workaholic. I have been lucky enough to hustle tables in Time Square for the past three years and just save money. I was tempted to stop but I am just going to hold out. I wrote the whole EP working 50 – 60 hours a week.

Me: How about some hobbies? What do like to do?

VÉRITÉ: I do yoga. I go with my drummer to Punderdome and I am trying to get good at doing puns.

Me: Punderdome?

VÉRITÉ: Yea, it’s a pun competition in Brooklyn. My drummer is phenomenal. Next one is in April.

Special thanks again to VÉRITÉ and her management for making this interview possible.
